

Every makeup formula has an application behavior. A brush should be designed around that behavior — not around a trend. What beauty brands should know before developing their next brush collection.
When new makeup formulas arrive at our sampling bench, one thing has become obvious: today’s products no longer behave like they did a decade ago. The biggest change in makeup isn’t color. It’s formula. Skin tints, serum foundations, cream bronzers and blushes, liquid contour, cushion formats, balms, hybrid makeup-skincare — the products landing on our development table today behave nothing like the products of ten years ago.
The brushes, in many collections, haven’t moved with them. We see the result from the factory side constantly: a brand launches a modern formula with a brush designed around powder-era logic, and the reviews come back — hard to pick up, won’t spread, streaks, patchy coverage, the brush eats half the product. The brand reads it as a formula problem. Very often, it isn’t. The formula is fine. The pairing is wrong.
The formula defines the job before the brush is drawn. That single sentence is what this article — and the way we develop brushes — is built on.

For decades, complexion makeup was powder-dominated, and brush design matured around powder’s needs: surface area to grab particles, density to press them into skin, shapes for dusting and buffing. That logic got so standardized that “a powder brush,” “a blush brush,” “a foundation brush” became fixed shapes in most catalogs.
Then the formulas moved — toward water, silicone, oils, skincare actives, lighter coverage, dewier finishes. Each of those changes the physics at the brush head: how product loads, how it releases, how it wants to be moved on skin. A shape that was optimal for pressed powder is simply answering a question nobody is asking anymore. The catalogs, in many cases, are still answering it. That’s why many catalogs still classify brushes by product category, while development teams increasingly need to think in terms of formula behavior.
You don’t need chemistry to design the right brush. You need one honest sentence about how the product behaves:

We’re not going to tell you “use X brush for cream blush” — that’s catalog thinking, and it’s how the mismatch happened in the first place. What matters is a handful of engineering variables, and how each one maps to the behavior above:
None of these variables work alone. A denser head changes how fiber length feels; a different tip shape changes how pressure is distributed. Brush engineering is almost always about balancing variables rather than maximizing one. None of them appear on a shelf or in a product photo — and all of them decide whether your formula performs in your customer’s hand.
Here’s the development-process version of the problem, and it will sound familiar if you’ve read our note on decision order: most brands finish the formula completely, launch planning begins, and then someone sources “a brush to go with it” — from a catalog, late, under time pressure.
The stronger sequence is parallel: while the formula is finalizing, the brush brief already carries its behavior — texture, coverage, finish — and the sample gets tested with the real product, not a stand-in. Co-developed pairs converge in fewer rounds, because the brush was never designed for a hypothetical formula that doesn’t exist.

The brush market will keep producing trend shapes, and some of them photograph beautifully. But great brushes don’t exist in isolation — they exist to make a formula perform at its best. As formulas keep evolving toward skincare-hybrid, lighter, wetter textures, the brands whose reviews say “the product applies like a dream” are the ones that treated the brush as part of the formula from the start.
The brush is no longer simply an accessory. For many modern formulas, it has become part of the product’s delivery system.

Cream wants control: precise placement and edge-blending without lifting what’s underneath. Liquid wants even release without absorption or streaking. Balm and hybrid textures want flexibility through a denser product. Same face, four different jobs – and the brush head should be engineered for the one your formula actually sets.

Liquids need fiber that carries product on the surface of the filament and releases it uniformly; a brush that absorbs product into the bundle both eats the formula and lets it go unevenly, which reads as streaks and patchiness. It’s rarely the formula – it’s the pairing.
Five engineering variables rather than any specific model: density (pickup and pressure-feel), fiber length and taper (spring and control), tip shape (where product lands and how edges blend), fiber surface (whether liquid rides or soaks), and recovery (whether the hundredth application looks like the first).
