Two questions arrive in almost every project, usually close together: “When can we have them?” and, a little later, “Why does it take that long?” Both are fair. A custom brush isn’t pulled from a shelf — it’s built through a sequence of stages, and several of those stages are deliberately unhurried, because the faster version of them shows up later in the customer’s hand.
The honest way to answer is to separate two clocks that brands often merge into one: the time it takes to sample a brush you can approve, and the time it takes to mass-produce it once approved. They’re different lengths, governed by different things. This guide walks both — and explains why the bulk window typically lands at 35–45 days.
Sample lead time runs from a locked spec to a physical brush you can hold, evaluate, and sign off. It’s measured in rounds, not a single date, because the first sample almost always invites an adjustment.
Bulk (mass production) lead time runs from your approved sample and purchase order to finished, packed, ready-to-ship goods. This is the 35–45 day figure — and it’s the one most people mean, and most underestimate.

A sample is the factory’s first physical translation of your spec, and round one usually takes about two weeks from sign-off — that’s the time to source the right fiber, build a head, fit a handle, and decorate a real brush you can judge. Most projects then go to a second round for a fiber-blend tweak, a ferrule color match, or a handle-weight adjustment; that’s another couple of weeks. Plan four to eight weeks for sampling overall, more if you’re tooling a custom shape, since the mold has to exist before round one can even begin.
The lever brands actually control here is round count. The single biggest accelerator we see is a complete brief and decisions locked early — a brand that confirms its ferrule Pantone before the handle is painted typically resolves in two rounds instead of four. Sampling isn’t where most delay hides; it’s where most avoidable delay does.

These stages don’t simply add up — several run in parallel. Handles and fiber bundles are produced at the same time; materials are procured up front while tooling settles. What you’re seeing in “35–45 days” isn’t the sum of every box; it’s the critical path — the longest chain of steps that genuinely have to happen in order.
One observation worth adding from real projects: the final gating item is often not the brush at all. Packaging frequently arrives later than brush production — a rigid box, a magnetic closure, a molded EVA insert, or a printed tray runs on its own supply chain, and in many programs it’s the packaging, not the assembly line, that decides the ship date. A brand can have finished brushes sitting in the building, waiting on the box that goes around them. Here’s the part that reframes the whole question. A meaningful share of the 35–45 days isn’t work at all — it’s waiting. Wood reaching the right moisture level. Paint curing between coats. Adhesive setting at the handle–ferrule joint. UV decoration curing hard enough to survive a season of washing.
You can add people to speed up the work. You cannot add people to speed up the waiting. A second tufting line or an extra QC team shortens labor; nothing shortens chemistry. And the waiting is mostly invisible — some of the most important production steps look like nothing is happening, because what’s happening is a bond curing or a finish hardening on a rack.
That invisibility is exactly the trap. A brush can look finished long before it’s actually ready to ship. As we’ve written about elsewhere, shortening a curing or drying step doesn’t change how the brush looks on the day it leaves the factory; it changes how it behaves weeks later — a finish that lifts, a logo that wears, a head that loosens. So when a brief asks “can you do it in ten days,” the honest factory answer is usually: only by removing a waiting step — and that step tends to reappear as a defect after delivery. The calendar isn’t padding. Part of it is the product curing. The most useful thing a brand can do with these numbers is run them in reverse. Start from the date the product has to be on shelf or in the warehouse, then subtract: shipping (sea freight is several weeks; air is days at a premium), then the 35–45 day bulk window, then the sampling rounds, then the brief and approval time before any of it begins. Count backward, and a “we need them in six weeks” becomes visible as a plan that needs either air freight, a simpler spec, or an earlier start — before it becomes a missed launch.
The brands that hit their dates aren’t the ones that found a faster factory. They’re the ones that knew the calendar early and planned against it.
