

How We Make It · A handle looks like the simplest part of a brush. Making one is easy. Making ten thousand identical ones is a process — and the process starts before any machine touches the wood.
Of all the parts of a makeup brush, the handle looks the least technical — a shaped piece of wood with paint on it. And it’s true: making one good handle is easy. What brands actually buy is something different: thousands of handles that weigh the same, feel the same, and carry paint the same way, batch after batch. That’s a process problem — and it’s worth seeing how the process actually works, because several of the decisions inside it belong to the brand, not the factory.
Handle quality is decided before the workshop ever sees the wood, and this part isn’t improvised per project — it’s a fixed procedure every batch of raw material passes, whatever the design:
Selection first. Incoming lumber is accepted by species and grade — fine, closed grain that will carry paint flat, free of the defects that surface later under lacquer.
Then drying. Wood arrives holding moisture, and wood that’s shaped too wet keeps moving afterward — warping subtly, opening hairline cracks under the finish, lifting paint at the seam months later. Every blank is kiln-dried to our internal target window and held stable before it’s released to machining. On a schedule this looks like dead time; it’s the same lesson as everywhere else in the factory — some hours look like waiting; they’re actually manufacturing.
Then hardness and stability. The dried material is checked against the standard for what it’s about to become — a batch destined for a heavier, harder handle is held to a different bar than one for a light economy shape.
A handle that cracks in a customer’s bathroom in winter almost always traces back to this stage — to material that skipped a step of the procedure, not to anything that happened later on the line.
Here’s something most articles get wrong: not every handle is “turned” the same way. There are two production roads, and the design decides which one your handle travels.
The standard road: routine shaping, batch smoothing. Most makeup brush handles are standard silhouettes, and for those the shaping is routine work — blanks pass through high-speed rounding and copying machines as a matter of course, and the surface is then brought up the efficient way: batch smoothing in tumbling and sanding drums, hundreds at a time, with hand-sanding where a simple shape needs a human touch. It’s economical, and it’s consistent because it’s collective — the batch is finished together, under the same conditions, to the same surface. For a standard shape, this road delivers exactly what it should: smooth, uniform, ready for sealing, at a sensible cost.
The signature road: a dedicated profile. The moment a brand’s design leaves the standard vocabulary — a proprietary curve, a silhouette that has to be yours — the handle earns its own stored profile: a dedicated program or master template, blanks cut against it one by one, extra sanding stages to hold the geometry. On this road, the shape lives in the machine, not in anyone’s hands — which is why a signature silhouette can repeat identically across ten thousand units, the same reproducibility principle that governs every other part of the brush. One honest limit: turning only makes shapes that are round in cross-section; ovals, flats, and sculpted forms go to milling — slower and costlier still.
The point for a brand: the silhouette you draw chooses the road, and the road chooses the cost. A standard shape smoothed in the drum and a signature shape cut against its own profile can both be excellent — they’re different purchases, like every other customization layer, and the choice belongs in the brief, not in a surprise on the quote.
Whichever road the handle traveled, it then gets sealed, primed, colored, and top-coated — and how the finish goes on depends on what the handle is. Solid-color handles at volume are often dip-coated — submerged for complete, even coverage, drained, and rack-dried between coats: the batch economics of paint. High-gloss premium handles are sprayed in cycles: primer, a between-coat sanding, color, topcoat, with drying — or UV curing on faster lines — between passes.
Either way, what decides the handle’s future isn’t the last glossy coat. It’s the sealing underneath it: a handle sealed only for appearance and a handle sealed against moisture are two different products, and only one survives a year of washing. Paint adhesion, gloss depth, and how the logo sits all depend on the wood below being smooth, stable, and properly primed — which is why wood choice and finish choice are really one decision.
The selection process narrows the material by the job — fine closed grain, stability, machinability, the right weight class:

Four questions decide almost everything about a wooden handle: painted or natural-grain finish? (shortlists the wood) — what should it weigh in the hand? (chooses between birch-class and beech-class) — do you need a certified sustainability story? (FSC supply is real and specifiable) — and is your silhouette standard or signature? (that picks the road: batch-smoothed economy or a dedicated stored profile, with the cost and minimums that follow).
None of these need technical vocabulary — they’re brand questions with manufacturing consequences, like everything else in a good brief. Beech is chosen when the brief calls for a harder, noticeably heavier handle. Poplar-class light woods serve economy price points but dent more easily. Bamboo – technically a grass, laminated into blanks – is used where visible natural grain and a sustainability story are the point, usually under clear coat rather than paint.

Almost always because of moisture, not the paint itself. Wood shaped before it’s fully dried and stabilized keeps moving afterward – opening hairline cracks under the lacquer and lifting paint at the seams months later, often in a dry winter bathroom. The second cause is sealing: a handle sealed only for appearance behaves very differently from one sealed against moisture once real washing starts.
Turning produces shapes that are round in cross-section – cylinders, tapers, curves, bulbs. Ovals, flattened grips, and sculpted forms move to milling, which is slower and costlier with different minimums. The silhouette a brand draws effectively chooses the production road, and the road chooses the cost – which is why handle shape belongs in the brief conversation early.
After sealing and priming, solid-color handles at volume are often dip-coated – submerged for complete even coverage, drained, and rack-dried between coats. High-gloss premium handles are sprayed in cycles: primer, between-coat sanding, color, and topcoat, with drying or UV curing between passes.
