    It’s a fair buyer question.     When a Western buyer writes “nylon brush” in a brief, in most OEM projects we see, what they’re describing is almost always PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) or a modified PBT variant.

    In beauty sourcing language, “nylon” often functions as a commercial catch-all term for synthetic brush fiber rather than a strict polymer classification. (One more compliance layer has grown teeth this year: the fiber is the easy line of a vegan claim, but certification audits the whole bill of materials — what actually makes a brush vegan.) Traditional nylon (such as PA66) carries a notable drawback for cosmetic brushes: water absorption around 8–9%, which causes the fibers to swell after washing. Guangdong tier-1 modified PBT is the option that fits — and for many commercial retail applications at this tier, the performance gap with Toray has narrowed substantially over the past decade. The real decision is tier-1 vs tier-2 Guangdong, not Japan vs China.

    Mid-tier brand at ~30,000+ units per SKU (Sephora Collection, mid-tier retail, high-volume Amazon storefront). Flexibility opens up. Tier-1 Guangdong modified PBT remains commercially efficient; Toray becomes accessible if the brand narrative justifies the lead time.

    Premium brand at 50,000+ units per SKU with positioning around “Japanese fiber” or “European craftsmanship.” Toray or Perlon now becomes both materially and commercially viable. The story value on packaging earns back the premium.

    Luxury launch where fiber source is part of the brand world. Toray, Perlon, or specific high-end specialty fibers are essentials, not negotiables. MOQ is no longer the gate.

    The practical decision for most brand programs we run is which tier of Guangdong fiber fits your retail target — and which factory has the assembly discipline to deliver it.

BASF often sits upstream in the global synthetic fiber supply chain, supplying polymer used by filament manufacturers worldwide — including premium spinning operations in Asia. BASF itself isn’t a finished brush-fiber product.

    The spinning layer: Perlon® GmbH / PEDEX®. A Bavarian high-end monofilament manufacturer, best known for premium toothbrush and industrial brush filament. Some European pro-artist brands (such as Da Vinci) use Perlon or PEDEX in their synthetic lines.

    Germany’s commercial role: upstream polymer + technical filament — high MOQ, narrow channel.

    Korea — design and trend influence

    Korean brush brands (3CE, innisfree, espoir, CLIO) source much of their synthetic fiber from Japanese Toray or Chinese tier-1 spinners. Korea’s genuine contributions sit in brush design and K-beauty trend leadership — dual-fiber blends, bio-based PBT trials, mixed-fiber aesthetics.

    China — Guangdong OEM flexibility and fast-response

    Over the past decade, the Guangdong supply chain has built deep capability in PBT modification, chemical tapering, and spinning precision — paired with the OEM flexibility (MOQ, lead time, color iteration) that is difficult for the other ecosystems to match at this scale.

    What suppliers market as “MCF”

    “Microcrystalline filament,” or what many Guangdong suppliers market as “microcrystalline filament” (MCF), is a marketing label rather than a standardized international technical designation. No single shared specification, no shared patent it points to. Different suppliers under the MCF label deliver different fiber systems underneath.

    What it generally refers to in practice is a family of modified-PBT fibers that combine some or all of:

    • A PBT base with property-modifying additives
    • A chemical-tapering process on the tip
    • Surface treatment that creates a micro-textured surface improving powder pickup and diffusion characteristics closer to natural hair

    When you read “MCF” in supplier sales materials, read it as “high-tier modified PBT from a Chinese spinner” — and ask for the actual measured indicators, not the marketing name.

    Looking at our floor’s actual order mix over the last few years: synthetic brush orders from overseas indie brands and major Chinese indie brands are largely running on Guangdong tier-1 modified PBT. The packaging copy reads “premium synthetic fiber” — a completely accurate description. It isn’t Toray, but for most mainstream consumers, the perceived performance difference is often smaller than buyers initially expect — and the cost / lead-time profile is fundamentally different.

    Six engineering dimensions we check on inbound fiber lots

    Set country and brand aside. The six dimensions below are the ones our QC team works through on inbound fiber lots — whether the fiber arrived from Japan, Germany, or a Guangdong spinner:

    1. Polymer base. Confirm PBT intrinsic viscosity (IV). Premium PBT typically sits at IV 0.85–1.20 dL/g. Below 0.80 usually indicates recycled or low-grade material.

    2. Denier and taper geometry. Not “finer is better” — the right diameter follows brush type:

    • Eye blending brush: 0.05–0.07 mm shaft, 0.018–0.020 mm tapered tip
    • Powder / highlighter brush: 0.07–0.10 mm shaft, blunter taper, higher density
    • Foundation / concealer brush: 0.10–0.15 mm shaft, often no taper, strong support

    3. Bending recovery. Bend a single fiber to 90°, release, measure the recovery angle. Premium PBT / modified PBT should hold above 88% after 5,000 cycles.

    4. Cross-section geometry. Round (balanced pickup / release), hollow (higher pickup, airy touch — blush, highlighter), star / trilobal (higher release force — eye blending).

    5. Color-lock rating. AATCC 16 for light fastness, AATCC 61 for wash fastness. A brush should leave the factory at grade 4 or above — grade 5 represents the highest rating on the test scale. (Wash behavior deserves more weight than it used to get: consumers now wash routinely, and wash durability has moved into sourcing briefs as a specification — how to source brushes built for frequent washing.)

    6. Compliance and safety testing. The two routine cosmetic-brush frameworks for major international markets:

    • U.S. market: California Proposition 65 — primarily lead, phthalates, and other restricted substances
    • EU market: REACH — chemical registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction framework

    Antibacterial testing (ISO 22196 or JIS Z 2801) isn’t typically part of standard compliance testing for cosmetic brushes — it becomes relevant only when the product is marketed with antibacterial claims, in which case the brush carries antibacterial additives and the test report sits alongside the marketing claim.

    Fiber is only one layer of brush performance

    This is the part most fiber-focused conversations miss — and the part that matters most once the fiber decision is made:

    The same Toray fiber, produced by two different factories, can result in two completely different brushes. (The formula pulls on this layer too — modern liquid and hybrid textures ask different things of a fiber surface than powders did: how modern formulas are changing brush design.)

    A premium fiber on its own does not deliver a premium brush. What the customer actually feels in their hand is shaped by multiple layers stacked on top of the fiber:

    • Bundling density — too sparse drops pickup; too tight kills release
    • Bundle shaping — flame-rounded, cone, dome, fan, paddle
    • Trimming precision — manual trim discipline vs loose tolerance
    • Glue chemistry and curing — adhesive grade, cure temperature, cure time
    • Ferrule compression — crimp pressure that determines bristle retention over years
    • Artisan finishing and QC — symmetry checks per bundle, per brush, per batch

    A premium fiber inside a poorly-disciplined factory produces a disappointing brush. A well-engineered modified PBT inside a disciplined factory produces a brush that outperforms expectations.

    “Which fiber” is one decision. “Which factory makes it” is the other — and at retail, the second decision often shows up more than the first.

    Usually no. The word ‘nylon’ has stuck in brush brief language for thirty years, but the fiber inside almost every premium synthetic cosmetic brush in 2026 is PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) or various modified-PBT fibers often marketed under names such as ‘microcrystalline filament (MCF).’ PBT was adopted across the industry because its water absorption is below 0.5% — versus 8–9% for true nylon like PA66 — which means PBT doesn’t swell or deform after washing.

The shaft and tip diameters, water absorption, color-lock rating, and bending recovery numbers all sit within the same band. Toray retains a small edge on tip-diameter minimums and bending-recovery percentages. The much larger commercial difference shows up in MOQ and lead time.

    Why don’t more brands use Toray fiber if it’s the gold standard?

    Minimum order quantity. Toray’s specific PBT grades typically require 100–200 kg per color per spec, which equates to about 25,000–60,000 brushes per fiber lot.
