When Sigma Beauty, It Cosmetics, or Hourglass release a “synthetic fiber” brush in 2026, the polymer inside is almost always PBT or a PBT derivative — not real nylon.

A first-time brand’s first order is usually 3,000–10,000 brushes total. Across every brush type and color combined, the fiber requirement might be 30–80 kg. For Toray-specific grades, the MOQ alone exceeds that. This isn’t a quality issue — it’s a commercial-fit issue at the supply-chain level.
Indie or first-SKU launch (3,000–10,000 units). Toray-grade fiber’s MOQ exceeds your total need. Guangdong tier-1 modified PBT is the option that fits — and for many commercial retail applications at this tier, the performance gap with Toray has narrowed substantially over the past decade. The real decision is tier-1 vs tier-2 Guangdong, not Japan vs China.
Mid-tier brand at ~30,000+ units per SKU (Sephora Collection, mid-tier retail, high-volume Amazon storefront). Flexibility opens up. Tier-1 Guangdong modified PBT remains commercially efficient; Toray becomes accessible if the brand narrative justifies the lead time.
Premium brand at 50,000+ units per SKU with positioning around “Japanese fiber” or “European craftsmanship.” Toray or Perlon now becomes both materially and commercially viable. The story value on packaging earns back the premium.
Luxury launch where fiber source is part of the brand world. Toray, Perlon, or specific high-end specialty fibers are essentials, not negotiables. MOQ is no longer the gate.

A brand commits to a fiber tier the cash flow can’t fund a second PO of; or commits to a single-color MOQ that locks 80% of the first PO into one variant when the market wants three; or commits to a lead time that misses the seasonal window. The fiber decision lives downstream of these — not upstream of them.

From the perspective of the South China brush supply chain, most commercial synthetic brush sourcing today revolves around four major ecosystems: Japan, Germany, Korea, and China. The polymer layer: BASF Ultradur®. A widely-used high-purity PBT resin grade. BASF often sits upstream in the global synthetic fiber supply chain, supplying polymer used by filament manufacturers worldwide — including premium spinning operations in Asia. BASF itself isn’t a finished brush-fiber product.
The spinning layer: Perlon® GmbH / PEDEX®. A Bavarian high-end monofilament manufacturer, best known for premium toothbrush and industrial brush filament. Some European pro-artist brands (such as Da Vinci) use Perlon or PEDEX in their synthetic lines.
Germany’s commercial role: upstream polymer + technical filament — high MOQ, narrow channel.
Korean brush brands (3CE, innisfree, espoir, CLIO) source much of their synthetic fiber from Japanese Toray or Chinese tier-1 spinners. Korea’s genuine contributions sit in brush design and K-beauty trend leadership — dual-fiber blends, bio-based PBT trials, mixed-fiber aesthetics.

Over the past decade, the Guangdong supply chain has built deep capability in PBT modification, chemical tapering, and spinning precision — paired with the OEM flexibility (MOQ, lead time, color iteration) that is difficult for the other ecosystems to match at this scale.

Today, a substantial share of the global cosmetic brush market — including many Western retail brushes — runs on Chinese modified PBT from Guangdong. Where it shows up most:
“Microcrystalline filament,” or what many Guangdong suppliers market as “microcrystalline filament” (MCF), is a marketing label rather than a standardized international technical designation. No single shared specification, no shared patent it points to. Different suppliers under the MCF label deliver different fiber systems underneath.
What it generally refers to in practice is a family of modified-PBT fibers that combine some or all of:

Looking at our floor’s actual order mix over the last few years: synthetic brush orders from overseas indie brands and major Chinese indie brands are largely running on Guangdong tier-1 modified PBT. The packaging copy reads “premium synthetic fiber” — a completely accurate description. It isn’t Toray, but for most mainstream consumers, the perceived performance difference is often smaller than buyers initially expect — and the cost / lead-time profile is fundamentally different.
Set country and brand aside. The six dimensions below are the ones our QC team works through on inbound fiber lots — whether the fiber arrived from Japan, Germany, or a Guangdong spinner:
1. Polymer base. Confirm PBT intrinsic viscosity (IV). Premium PBT typically sits at IV 0.85–1.20 dL/g. Below 0.80 usually indicates recycled or low-grade material.
2. Denier and taper geometry. Not “finer is better” — the right diameter follows brush type:
3. Bending recovery. Bend a single fiber to 90°, release, measure the recovery angle. Premium PBT / modified PBT should hold above 88% after 5,000 cycles.
4. Cross-section geometry. Round (balanced pickup / release), hollow (higher pickup, airy touch — blush, highlighter), star / trilobal (higher release force — eye blending).
5. Color-lock rating. AATCC 16 for light fastness, AATCC 61 for wash fastness. A brush should leave the factory at grade 4 or above — grade 5 represents the highest rating on the test scale. Antibacterial testing (ISO 22196 or JIS Z 2801) isn’t typically part of standard compliance testing for cosmetic brushes — it becomes relevant only when the product is marketed with antibacterial claims, in which case the brush carries antibacterial additives and the test report sits alongside the marketing claim.
This is the part most fiber-focused conversations miss — and the part that matters most once the fiber decision is made:

A premium fiber on its own does not deliver a premium brush. What the customer actually feels in their hand is shaped by multiple layers stacked on top of the fiber:
A premium fiber inside a poorly-disciplined factory produces a disappointing brush. A well-engineered modified PBT inside a disciplined factory produces a brush that outperforms expectations.
“Which fiber” is one decision. “Which factory makes it” is the other — and at retail, the second decision often shows up more than the first.

The honest answer: there’s no single “best” in isolation. There’s the right fit between fiber tier, factory discipline, MOQ, and cash flow.

The shaft and tip diameters, water absorption, color-lock rating, and bending recovery numbers all sit within the same band. Toray retains a small edge on tip-diameter minimums and bending-recovery percentages. The much larger commercial difference shows up in MOQ and lead time.
Minimum order quantity. Toray’s specific PBT grades typically require 100–200 kg per color per spec, which equates to about 25,000–60,000 brushes per fiber lot. A first-time brand’s entire first PO might only need 30–80 kg of fiber across every brush type combined — below Toray’s single-spec MOQ. This isn’t a quality decision, it’s a commercial-fit decision at the supply-chain level.
BASF’s Ultradur® series is the high-purity PBT polymer pellet that many premium fiber spinners — in Japan, China, Korea — load into their lines as raw material. BASF doesn’t make finished brush fiber itself; it sits one layer upstream, providing the polymer base. So ‘German PBT’ often shows up upstream of what gets identified as Japanese or Chinese fiber, not as a parallel competitor.
For most international markets, two compliance frameworks cover the standard cosmetic-brush testing: California Proposition 65 for the US market (lead, phthalates, and other restricted substances), and EU REACH for the European market (chemical registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction). Antibacterial testing is a special-order item — only performed when the brush product line explicitly incorporates antibacterial additives. It isn’t part of the standard cosmetic-brush test suite.
